We have had a lovely week in Little Acorns, the highlight of which must have been celebrating the Lunar New Year. The children have spent lots of time outside, despite the chilly weather and are becoming experts in ‘What’s the time Mr Wolf?’!
The children have taken part in lots of arts and crafts, messy play and even had the opportunity to start making their own music in ICT! Enjoy the weekend, and do come and see us at the Solefield Rugby Tournament on Saturday morning if you fancy some fresh air and cheering the older boys on.
Book of the week
This week we have been reading ‘Building a Home’ By Polly Faber. It is part fiction, part fact about all the processes, jobs and machines involved in the construction of a building. It has been the perfect addition to our construction site role play area and has led to lots of imaginative play both inside the classroom and out. We have been making ‘cement’ in the sand tray, building different structures with wooden blocks and took the opportunity to practise some positional language.
새해 복 많이 받으세요 - Happy Lunar New Year!
On Wednesday we enjoyed a delicious lunch at school to celebrate the Lunar New Year, complete with fortune cookies. We enjoyed sharing the messages from them at snack time.
If you pop into the classroom you will see the beautiful lanterns that the children have created. Thank you to Lewis’ Mummy for providing us with the correct way to write Happy New Year in Korean! We have been talking lots about the zodiac race and had lots of fun retelling the story using some stick puppets.
The messy play tray depicting the river that the animals crossed has been particularly popular, with Hugo, Mark and Arthur creating a ‘house for all the animals to sleep inside’! Understanding the world is such a key part of the Early Years curriculum and it is wonderful to see the children so enthusiastic about different cultures and celebrations.
Write Dance
This week the children enjoyed a session of ‘Write Dance’, something we try to incorporate into the timetable on a regular basis. Write Dance is a dynamic way to develop essential motor skills through music, movement and creative mark making. The children are seated on the floor, which gives them more freedom to move, in front of a large piece of paper. With a crayon in each hand they are then encouraged to join in with the movements in the song, helping develop both gross motor skills and the important skill of crossing their midlines.
The founder of the concept believes that strong motor skills are an essential precursor to the development of handwriting.
Something to look forward to
Next week we will be doing some cooking and starting to prepare some work for the school art exhibition. Another busy week in store!
