Another week has flown by and it has been lovely to have Luca back with us after his trip away. The classroom has been filled with your wonderful, happy children, chatting, playing, exploring and role playing, They have all bonded so well with old friends and new and it makes our day to catch the little flashes of an encouraging word or an offer of help between them. Wishing you a wonderful weekend.
Book of the week
This week we have been reading ‘The High Street’ by Alice Melvin. It is a beautifully illustrated book about a little girl heading off to the (independent!) shops on the high street with her shopping list. It is one of those rare books which has it all for children this age, repetition, rhyming, numbers and lots of great vocabulary. Your child should now be able to explain to you what a kazoo is! The children really impressed us with their recall of what was next on the list, a great indicator of comprehension, and important pre-reading skill.
Our quote of the week
When we were reading our book of the week, I asked the children what sort of shop they thought the toy shop was. Hermione replied ‘It’s a birthday shop!’. I think that is a great idea!
Focus of the week – Literacy
As you will see from the group picture, we have a class of book worms! After the children have finished their snack in the morning, we encourage some quiet reading time in the book corner or on the carpet. This is important both for building focus and concentration but also to understand about the structure and care of books and stories.
In addition to this, we have carried out lots of activities this week to support the children in their pre-reading and writing skills. With a group that spans two year groups in age, we obviously have a wide variation in stages of development, but we follow each child closely and provide them with activities that will bring enjoyment and build confidence.
Amongst other things, we have been working on name writing and letter formation, sound recognition, and segmenting and blending. If you would like any pointers about how to support your child with this at home, please do ask us!
Something to look forward to
Next week we are looking forward to taking part in some celebrations for Chinese New Year. If you have anything related to this that you would be happy for your child to share in class for show and tell, we would love to see it!
