It has been lovely to welcome the children back after half term and they have settled back into the school routine beautifully. This year is such a huge period of growth and development in young children and it has been particularly noticeable this week how much they have changed even since September, it really is a privilege to see. We have had a busy and productive week of arts and crafts, name writing, learning about quantities and comparisons and starting to practice for our Nativity!
Congratulations!
Well done to Arthur who was awarded a Kindness Award by Mrs McClure for being exceptionally kind to a child during the holiday camps. We are very proud of you, Arthur!
Book of the week
Our new topic for this half of the term is ‘Traditional Tales’ This week we have been focussing on Little Red Riding Hood, and reading a copy of it which has no words, only pictures. Wordless books are a fantastic resource for pre-reading which help to develop language, confidence, understanding and story telling skills. It has been wonderful to hear the children have a go at relaying parts of the story, and reenacting it with the puppets.
Our quote of the week
This week is not as much of a quote as a performance! Lewis absolutely sang his heart out during the first run through of our Nativity songs, it was a delight to watch!
Focus of the week – Maths
We have been looking at the concept of groups and collections this week in maths and the associated quantity language. The children were invited to take a ‘shopping bag’ and collect items from around the room. We then looked at who had ‘more’, ‘less’, ‘the most’, ‘the least’ etc. They grasped the idea well and it has also been a great way of working on accurate counting skills and one to one correspondence.
Mrs Mack also went shopping over half term and we now have some wonderful new wooden resources which have been testing the children's problem solving skills, whilst also working their fine motor muscles.
Something to look forward to...
Next week we will be working on our climbing skills on the gym apparatus in PE.
Solefield Independent Project
Each term, we have a focus for the Solefield Independent Project, an initiative offering the children the chance to work on a project at home, should they wish to, as a little extra to their school work. The project can take any format, the children really are in control, and anyone who can either bring in, or show some evidence of what they have done, receives a Headmistress’ Award.
This term in recognition of the fundraising we have been doing for the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance, the topic is flying machines! If your Little Acorn would like to draw a picture, make a model or even just share a book about things that fly, we would love to see it!
