Since January 2024, Solefield School in Sevenoaks, previously an all-boys' school for 75 years, has successfully become co-educational, significantly improving both inclusivity and academic performance.

This change marks a progressive step towards inclusivity and diversity, aiming to provide equal opportunities for both boys and girls. The transition has been a remarkable success, reflected in the balanced gender ratio, with each class in the younger two years now consisting of 50% boys and 50% girls.

This mixed-gender interaction is crucial in preparing students for real-world scenarios, where they will work and interact with individuals of all genders. Such an environment promotes mutual respect, empathy and negotiation skills from an early age, positively impacting social development.

The school has worked diligently to ensure that the curriculum and extracurricular activities are designed to cater to the interests and strengths of both genders. From sports teams to academic clubs, there are ample opportunities for boys and girls to engage in activities that pique their interests and nurture their talents. The Independent School Inspectorate in February 2024 awarded Solefield the highest grades possible in all areas.

Parents and guardians appreciate the school's commitment to providing a holistic education that prepares their children for the future. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with one parent saying, 'Our son absolutely loves having girls in his class. One of his best friends is a girl and we love the genuine and positive interactions he is gaining from having the friendship with not only boys but also girls'.
Future plans include expanding co-educational facilities to higher year groups and continuing to monitor the impact on pupil outcomes.

Solefield is an award-winning independent school for boys and girls aged 3 to 13 in the heart of Sevenoaks. Alongside achieving exceptional academic results in small classes at 11+ and 13+, Solefield pupils learn about community, giving back and their place in the world, setting a firm foundation for successful and well-rounded lives ahead.
