Solefield’s annual U11 Philps 7’s Rugby Tournament saw boys from 9 schools compete in two sections in yet another wonderful festival of rugby. This year Solefield were in the fortunate position to enter a B team into the Blue division for the first time in the tournament’s history, with these boys epitomising the values expected of a Solefield boy throughout the tournament in the face of stiff competition from other schools A teams. It was a joy to see their determination, teamwork and spirit throughout the day and they certainly gained the respect of all the teams and spectators.
Solefield’s A team competed in the Red division and got off to a fantastic start against St Ronan’s, winning comfortably after a lighting start to the game. Their next fixture saw us take on a very competitive Hilden Grange side, but again ran out comfortable winners due to our physicality and some quick thinking from the kick off. In our next two games we would take on the two tournament favourites, New Beacon and Yardley Court.
The New Beacon game was a fascinatingly physical contest between two well organised sides. An exceptional team score, coupled with some moments of attacking brilliance and defensive might saw the team to a win in the final stages.
With the tournament on the line, the boys took on Yardley Court. In a tight affair, Yardley eventually took the advantage and despite the boys best efforts, Yardley won the game and made it a nervy watch for our boys in Yardley’s final game against New Beacon with all three schools in with a chance of winning the tournament.
Fortune was on Solefield’s side however, with a narrow New Beacon win ensuring that Solefield won the Philps 7’s for the first time in the tournament's history. A very proud day for all involved!
