Music

“I love playing the violin with my class and it is really fun.” Benedict, Reception

Our all-inclusive policy extends to Music, in which all pupils are introduced to the fundamental activities of performing, listening and composing. Solefield has a purpose-built music school which helps to foster a strong tradition of playing and performing. This is reflected in the large percentage of pupils who have individual music lessons on a wide variety of instruments.

Reception children experience rhythm, percussion and singing. Pupils in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 learn the recorder, Years 3 the violin, Year 4 the melodica, and Year 5 the ukulele. Pupils in Years 6, 7 and 8 have keyboard lessons in our custom-built keyboard room.

All pupils perform in year group concerts where emphasis is on participation and enjoyment. In addition, there are informal concerts throughout the year as well as more formal events. The school has three choirs, two orchestras, as well as string, woodwind, cello, guitar and brass groups. Many of the children participate in a rock/technology group learning performance and recording techniques. Pupils regularly gain scholarships to senior school.
